Turquoise. It wasn’t until the last ten years that I truly have come to appreciate my traditional birthstone. As a child my mother would take me to Cripple Creek, CO where they had public access to gold, silver and turquoise mines. You could look for and harvest your own vein of mineral. That was over 20 years ago and they many no longer exist, but it is a memory I will cherish.
As such, there is a jar of raw turquoise sitting in my cabinet from those days. The largest piece I harvested myself. However, despite the memory of the experience, I detested turquoise. I had mounds of turquoise jewelry and only one or two pieces that I truly thought to be lovely. However, nowadays, turquoise has taken on a more refined, polished non-Southwestern look. As such, my love affair for turquoise has emerged, thus this week’s feature piece.
This week as an omage to the 60′s, but with a twist, this piece is whimsical, yet stylish. Utilizing pure copper metal to set off the natural beauty of the turquoise beads, the peace sign remains the primary focal point of the necklace. A modern twist on an old theme.
